Este edicto estableció la libertad de religión en el Imperio Romano, dando fin a las persecuciones contra ciertos grupos religiosos, particularmente los cristianos. Mediante el "Edicto de Tesalónica" (380 d.C.), decretado por el emperador romano Teodosio (347-395 d.C.), el cristianismo se convirtió en la religión oficial del Imperio Romano. Se estableció el Papado y la Iglesia como instituciones paralelas al propio Estado.Con la desaparición del Imperio Romano de Occidente al comenzar la Edad Media, el cristianismo católico occidental se separa del oriental ortodoxo con el Cisma de Oriente (1051).
